Find answers to common questions about using Hikotron chargers.

Getting Started

Download the Hikotron app from the App Store or Google Play, then follow the registration process. You'll need to provide your email, create a password, and add a payment method. Once you have registered you will need to verify your email account from the email sent to you. If this does not come through immediately first check your junk folder and/or get in touch with Hikotron.

Yes, for most charging locations you need a Hikotron account to access our charging network. This ensures secure payments and allows you to track your charging history.

There are some locations that have contactless payment options. For these locations you do not need a Hikotron account just tap your credit/debit card to start the charging session and tap to end the session.

Charging Process

Charging time on an AC charger depends on three main things:
your vehicle, the charger power, and how full your battery already is.

As a general guide:

  • Overnight or workplace charging (7–11 kW AC): 6–10 hours for a full charge

  • Higher-power AC chargers (up to 22 kW): 2–6 hours

  • Top-ups: 1–3 hours can add 40–100 km of range for most EVs

Most EVs limit how much power they can accept on AC, so even if a charger is rated at 22 kW, your vehicle may charge at a lower rate. This is completely normal and helps protect the battery.

AC charging is designed for longer stops—such as at home, work, hotels, shopping centres, or destinations—where you can plug in and let the car charge while you go about your day.

💡 Tip: You can check your vehicle’s maximum AC charging speed in the owner’s manual or on the vehicle display to get the most accurate estimate.

Yes, you can stop charging at any time. Simply use the “End Charge” button in the mobile app, or unplug the charging cable from your vehicle to end the session.

Charging will stop immediately once either action is taken.

Please start by checking the following:

  1. Your account balance must be at least $1 to start a charge.
  2. Have you connected your cable to your car and the Hikotron charger ?
  3. Check charger ID matches the app and the charging socket  you are trying to use.

Please start by checking the following:

1. Has your phone got reception? Wait for signal and try again.

2. Unplug the cable from your vehicle and this will end the charging session.

Please try the following:

  1. Unplug the cable from your vehicle
  2. Pushing cable in slightly into the Hikotron charging socket first then pull out. If this doesn’t work please call us on 0800 694 456.

Please contact us via the mobile app or email [email protected]

No problem. We sell charging cables, so feel free to get in touch with us and we can help you get set up. Alternatively, you can purchase any Type 2 charging cable that is compatible with your EV from an EV charging retailer — these are compatible with our chargers and all other Type 2 socket chargers around New Zealand.

Payments

Our standard rate is $0.50 per kWh. Prices may vary by location. You can view the exact rate for each charger in the app before starting your session.

We accept credit/debit cards and in-app payments. Simply top up your account balance and charges will be deducted automatically.

Idle fees are applied to encourage users to move their vehicle after it has finished charging. Idle fees will be charged when your vehicle is no longer charging for over 30 min. Idle fees are shown in the mobile app and are site specific.
