Hamilton drivers and visitors now have more convenient access to electric vehicle (EV) charging, with 20 new permanent charge points installed across key locations in the city.
Hamilton City Council has partnered with Hamilton-based EV charging company Hikotron to deliver the network of 7kW AC chargers, supporting the city’s long-term transport decarbonisation goals and making it easier for people to charge while they work, shop, or enjoy Hamilton’s attractions.
The chargers are now permanently installed at high-use destinations including Hamilton Gardens, Hamilton Zoo, Garden Place car park, Sonning Place car park, Eastlink Sport Hub, Rotokauri Transport Hub, and Claudelands Events Centre, providing reliable charging where people naturally spend time.
Hikotron Director Stephanie Smits O’Callaghan said the project reflects a growing demand for practical, everyday charging infrastructure.
“Hikotron’s chargers and mobile app have been designed and built in New Zealand, using proven European AC Type 2 technology recommended by Waka Kotahi for public AC charging,” said Smits O’Callaghan.
“We’re proud to be delivering permanent charging infrastructure in our home city. AC charging plays a critical role in supporting EV drivers who want to top up while they go about their day.”
The dual-socket chargers provide around 45 kilometres of range per hour of charging, making them well-suited to longer stays such as events, workdays, or visits to parks and attractions. A built-in cable-locking feature allows drivers to leave their vehicle charging securely while they do other things.
Hamilton City Council Mayor Paula Southgate welcomed the addition to the city’s EV infrastructure.
“It’s great to see more chargers available in places people already visit regularly,” said Mayor Southgate.
“As an EV driver myself, having reliable charging options around the city makes owning and driving an EV an easier choice.”
Deputy Mayor and Chair of the Infrastructure and Transport Committee Angela O’Leary said the rollout supports Hamilton’s wider sustainability goals.
“If we want more people to choose electric vehicles, charging needs to be convenient and dependable,” said Deputy Mayor O’Leary.
“These charge points help make EV ownership more practical for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.”
The Hamilton rollout forms part of Hikotron’s wider expansion across New Zealand.
