What is a Type 2 Charging Cable and Do You Need Type 1 or Type 2?
A Type 2 to Type 1 EV charging cable connects a Type 2 public or home charger (IEC 62196-2) to a vehicle with a Type 1 inlet (SAE J1772). All Hikotron stations and most public chargers in New Zealand use a Type 2 socket so if your car has a Type 1 port, this cable is what you need.
Common Type 1 vehicles in New Zealand include the Nissan LEAF (2011–2017), Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV (2013–2021), Mitsubishi i-MiEV, and imported Chevrolet Volt PHEVs. Check the socket on your car's charging flap, a 5-pin round connector means Type 1.
Because Type 1 vehicles only accept single-phase AC charging, this cable is rated at 32A single phase, fully supporting Mode 3 charging approved to IEC 62196 and UL 2251 (SAE J1772).
5-pin round port on your car? You need this cable — for Nissan LEAF (2011–17) and Outlander PHEV.
7-pin oval port on your car? You need a Type 2/Type 2 cable instead — for Tesla, Hyundai Ioniq, Kia EV6, BYD, VW ID series and most 2018+ EVs.
