What is a Type 2 Charging Cable and Is This the Right One for Your EV?
A Type 2 charging cable (also called a Mennekes cable or IEC 62196-2 cable) connects a Type 2 AC charger to a vehicle with a Type 2 inlet. It is the universal standard for EV charging across New Zealand and Europe. All Hikotron stations and the vast majority of public chargers in NZ, use Type 2 sockets.
The Hikotron Type 2 to Type 2 EV charging cable is the right choice for virtually every modern electric vehicle sold in New Zealand after 2018 including Tesla Model 3, Model Y, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Ioniq 6, Kia EV6, BYD Atto 3, Volkswagen ID.4, and BMW i-series. Check your car's charging flap a 7-pin oval connector means Type 2.
Unlike older single-phase Type 1 cables, this Mode 3 electric vehicle charging cable supports three-phase AC charging at up to 32A (22 kW), making it the fastest AC charging cable available for compatible vehicles. On a standard single-phase home charger it delivers up to 7.4 kW, still significantly faster than a regular power socket.
7-pin oval port on your car? You need this cable — Type 2/Type 2. Works with Tesla, Hyundai Ioniq, Kia EV6, BYD, VW ID series and most 2018+ EVs.
5-pin round port on your car? You need a Type 2/Type 1 cable instead — for Nissan LEAF (2011–17) and Outlander PHEV.

Frequently Asked Questions
A Type 2 charging cable (IEC 62196-2, also called a Mennekes cable) is the EV charging standard across New Zealand and Europe. It features a 7-pin oval connector and supports single-phase (up to 7.4 kW) and three-phase charging (up to 22 kW). Every modern EV sold new in NZ uses a Type 2 inlet, and all Hikotron public chargers have Type 2 sockets.
Open your car's charging flap and check the port. A 7-pin oval connector means Type 2, this is the cable you need. A 5-pin round connector means Type 1, you need a Type 2/Type 1 cable instead. Most EVs sold new in NZ after 2018 use Type 2, including Tesla, Hyundai Ioniq 5 and 6, Kia EV6, BYD Atto 3, MG ZS EV, and VW ID.4.
This cable supports up to 32A three-phase (22 kW) on compatible chargers, or up to 7.4 kW on single-phase home chargers. Actual speed is capped by your car's onboard charger — Tesla Model 3 typically accepts 11 kW AC, Hyundai Ioniq 5 up to 11 kW, Kia EV6 up to 11 kW. At 11 kW a 77 kWh battery charges from 10–80% in under 6 hours.
Yes, every Hikotron cable includes a 1-year manufacturer warranty with NZ-based support. See the Deliveries & Returns policy for full details.
Have an Older EV with a Type 1 Port?
If your car has a 5-pin round charging port (Nissan LEAF 2011–17, Outlander PHEV, or imported Japanese/American EVs), you need the Type 2 to Type 1 cable instead.
